An eBay auction for a piece of cardboard “shaped like an iPhone” hit £200,000 yesterday as a bidding war kicked off online. The item started at 1p but rocketed in less than five hours with more than 100 bids.
The tongue-in-cheek description boasted it was fully biodegradable and would NEVER need charging.
It said it was “thinner than the iPhone (probably) and at the same time you are far less likely to get mugged”. The listing went on: “If your thing is being individual and different then this is the product for you.
“Never be embarrassed by someone using the same gadget on the tube. “Guaranteed to make you feel superior and cool - this is way ahead of the times.”
The odd auction was eventually suspended at £200,100 before later being relisted.
Fundraiser Julia McGill posted the item as a quirky way to raise funds for a charity trek along the Great Wall of China for Dig Deep (Africa).
