If you have not been paying attention, a law was passed on September 12 by Philippine’s President Benigno Aquino, which has had the country in an uproar challenging that it violates the right to free speech.
The law in question Republic Act No.10175, better known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, has some elements that are good, like allowing the identification and punishment of internet crimes such as hacking, identity theft, and spam. However, it is the elements relating to online libel and the ability to block websites without a court order that have people upset and filing petitions against it.
Apparently, the law is so vague that even retweeting, linking, or sharing an update or post that has criticisms would be considered a crime and punishable under law.
Anonymous Philippines has been very active hacking numerous organizations and websites, as well as many political officials, like Senator Teofisto Guingona III, who are petitioning the Supreme Court to have the questionable elements of the law declared unconstitutional.
