Chalkboard signs generally flag up that a bar or shop is open or advertise special deals. But these 27 establishments went the extra mile in an attempt to entice customers off the street and into their premises with a range of hilarious catch phrases, jokes and menu offerings - or simply the promise of copious amounts of booze.
One cafe, in the selection compiled by website, The Chive, tried to hypnotise passersby into popping in by drawing a hypnosis spiral with a piece of streaky bacon in the centre, under the heading 'bacon hypnosis'.
Another funny chalkboard informs people that the venue's backyard is open, adding '... and so is your fly. (How embarrassing.)'
At an establishment called Cafe Hide Away, a chalkboard lists a hangover breakfast option consisting of 'one glass of sparkling wine, one gherkin and an aspirin' and a 'Greek' breakfast, which includes Greek coffee and '1 cigarette'.
Another sign has what looks like a grasshopper saying to another, headless, insect: 'You slept with her didn't you?' while a sign advertising the soup of the day simply says 'WHISKEY' with a drawing of a glass projecting Godly beams of light.
